Tanker Explosion  I-69 & I-465
Indiana Quick Clearance

Coordinated efforts result in successful response  Posted: October 27, 2009

"In one of the state’s heaviest-traveled corridors, what could have been mass confusion ended in a coordinated and successful handling of a serious crash.  When the propane tanker exploded Oct. 22 at I-465 and I-69 on Indianapolis’ Northeast side, a number of organizations came together. These men and women worked immediately to identify the safest and most effective route for drivers and began investigating road and bridge damage. The response teams wasted no time in preparing for the daily commuters. This section of roadway sees approximately 150,000 vehicles each day, so time was critical. Whether at the scene or in offices coordinating communications, a number of people were planning and evaluating alternative routes, adjusting traffic signals and assessing the damage, and minimized the crisis that could have occurred. In addition to the Indiana Department of Transportation staff, those that did an outstanding job to create a safe
environment include the Indiana State Police; fire departments from Lawrence Township, Indianapolis, Fishers and Lawrence; Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Marion County Health Department; Indiana Department of Environmental Management; the state’s Federal Emergency Management Agency; the Salvation Army, federal
highway administrators; Purdue University’s School of Engineering; Zore’s Wrecker Service; Roadsafe; Indiana Sign and Barricade; Spill Recovery of Indiana; and other agencies and companies.  To everyone who has worked so hard on this crash, thank you for the coordinated efforts that resulted in a job well done."
